Build Thread Part 20

In March of 2024: So, a bit over 4 months now from my previous update about getting the engine built and here’s where we stand: the car isn’t done yet. I should have listened to everyone who advised against going with SRM parts, but I was trying to save some money at the time, and it’s ended up costing me more money. We ended up having issues with both the SRM turbo and the SRM LPFP. We were able to revolve the turbo issue, but had to replace the LPFP, and that is where we currently sit: waiting for a replacement LPFP. I decided to go with a new Iroz unit, but they are currently back-ordered.

Brian and the team at Redline were able to do the initial break-in of the engine, but when they started to do tune refinement with Darin, the secondary pump in the SRM LPFP started to cut out. It was determined that it would be best to just replace the whole thing so that’s the plan. All of the other parts that I had sourced and initially laid out for use in the build were installed and had zero issues. The one addition that we added, and it was at Brian’s recommendation, was to change from the VTT intercooling piping, to hard piping. Brian had a second hand set of some TTE intercooler piping, so we swapped that on the car. I also had some scope creep, and took advantage of some holiday sales over the winter, I picked up the Iroz billet fuel rail and intake runners, so those parts have also been added to the build.

I ended up making the decision that while I wait for the replacement pump to come in, that I would pickup the car and take it back to the body shop so that way the rear carbon fiber doors can be fitted to the car. The rear doors should be done by the end of next week, which should give me time to re-do the livery on the doors, and to get the car aligned before my first track event this year.

As some of you may recall, I also have the 529 innovations carbon fiber roof, but since the car still needs to go back to Redline when the new pump comes in, we are going to hold off on installing it since that will take some time, and the car needs to be drivable when it goes back to Redline.

We are getting down to the wire as race season has already started here on the east coast. I was planning on trying to do the season opener event at the beginning of March, but missed the event since I didn’t even have the car back by then. The new goal is a NASA event at Summit Point the weekend of April 13/14, which is just three weeks from now.
